Lynfred Chenin Blanc Wine History and Information
The spectacular wine of the month is Chenin Blanc. Chenin Blanc is one of our favorite summer wines because of its clean and crisp nature. Chenin Blanc is the perfect wine for summer sipping! It is such a popular wine that back in 1989 Lynfred Winery’s Chenin Blanc was awarded the number two position as ‘Best Oyster Wine in America’.
The Chenin Blanc grapevine is one of the most versatile of all wine grapes for its ability to produce crisp, dry wines, slightly sweet wines and even dessert wines. The Chenin Blanc vine tends to be very disease resistant and adaptable to both sandy and clay loams, producing five to eight tons per acre. Because of this quality, vineyard operators find this a productive grape to plant.
The popularity of Chenin Blanc in America really started in the 1970’s. In the 1970’s wineries labeled their wine as the name of the predominant grape (such as we do today). Chenin Blanc, easy to pronounce, with a hint of sweetness, was a hit with the wine consuming public.
The native home to the Chenin Blanc vine is the Loire Valley of France; however, it is also grown in Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Argentina, South Africa, Australia and the United States. The most frequent varietal bouquet and flavor elements from the Chenin Blanc grape tend to be honey, honeysuckle, melon, honeydew and cantalope. When aged in oak, elements of vanilla and sweet oak are often present.
The Chenin Blanc grapes for the wine of the month came from Jones’ Vineyard in Washington state. Drink this clean and lively wine with a day full of sunshine for optimal enjoyment!

[ed. note…I learned some interesting things about the aromas and tastes during a winery tour this weekend…apparently those are assigned by wine-tasters as more of an opinion so you have an idea of what the wine might taste and smell like so you can see if it’s in the ballpark of what you like. A famous example is when you see a description of a wine having a “bacon after-taste”…So if you don’t smell/taste exactly whatever is presented as the smell/taste, it’s just a guideline, not a rule, so don’t worry about it.]
Aroma: Brilliant tropical aromas of lychee fruit and citrus
Palate: Medium-bodied. Forward tropical fruit on the palate with sweet and tangy citrus notes. A fruity and clean finish.
[ed. note: for me, the same goes with food…I like to drink wine with food. A good wine with good food with make a good meal. They don’t necessarily need to be paired up specifically to enjoy.]
Foods: Amazing when paired with paella, honey roasted chicken, calamari, Chinese food, sweet corn, grilled trout and grilled vegetables.
Please recommend Lynfred if you like what you read.
