Chardonnay is known as the most sought out grape variety in the world. Its popularity is so vast that just the idea of a glass of white wine sparks the instant thought of Chardonnay (an easy wine to pronounce, too).
The history of the Chardonnay grape reveals a bit of a dispute. The Lebanese and Syrians claim original responsibility for nurturing the variety; however, Chardonnay has become so popular in France that it rose from the eleventh to fourth most important white grape variety.
Due to Chardonnay’s laid-back ways, it can be made into a wide array of styles. Because of its versatility, it is often challenging to distinguish a true flavor that can be associated with the grape. In fact, distinctions come from the soil, climate and winemaker’s touch. Its aromas are often associated with notes of apples, melons or pineapple, but can even range to buttery if aged in oak.
The Chardonnay grapes that were chosen for this particular wine came from Washington State. Last fall, Washington grape growers crushed 33,400 tons of Chardonnay, the most ever in Washington - pushing it ahead of Riesling - as the state’s #1 grape. Chardonnay, made famous in France’s Burgundy region, is the #1 white wine grape in California, too, where it is often made in a bold, buttery style. Washington Chardonnay cannot necessarily be defined in any particular way. It can be rich like California or bright and crisp like a true French Chablis.
Brighter, crisper styles of Chardonnay seem to be the current consumer preference; however, Lynfred Winemaker Andres Basso has found a beautiful balance of both styles. By carefully selecting the perfect barrels, Andres is able to give the wine vanilla notes and a creamy finish while still showcasing the grape’s bright, fruity aromas & flavors. To further increase the Chardonnay’s drinkability, Andres added 25% Pinot Grigio to the 2009 Chardonnay.
Aroma: Pretty aromas of pineapples, cinnamon, melon and pears.
Palate: This medium-bodied Chardonnay is loaded with creamy notes of vanilla and hints of bright citrus. A velvety, citrus finish.
Foods: Delight is lighter dishes such as sea bass with citrus and soy or melon and prosciutto.
